Frackie's Road to Frugality

“her left breast has now done more for humanity…”

Filed under: Good Karma | Tags: , , , , , —>I just happened to fall upon this site via google, and let me just say that this is a great website. I wish I would have known about it when Arianna was younger and racking up the formula. This site is all about good karma and giving away stuff that people don’t use or need anymore. There’s a lot of mamas on here that swap coupons too. Last night I posted a comment that I was looking for a particular coupon and I already have another mama who is sending me one!

In this day-in-age, it’s encouraging to know that there are still people out there that value the idea of giving stuff away or swapping it. We all know how this economy is doing at the present moment, so I think we all should start helping others out a little bit more. I think that the dynamic of individuals, giving away things that other people need, can be one of the strongest characteristics of mankind. It can change lives. It can change present circumstances. Why are we all so greedy? Why don’t we look out for the better good of mankind?

One of the most touching and selfless acts I think I have ever seen is this…

Salma Hayek breastfeeding a newborn, baby boy from Sierra Leone. One reporter calls Salma cool “because her left breast has now done more for humanity in a few minutes than I’ve done in roughly my life.” How true! Salma had something to give…and she gave. I’m sure she thought of the ratifications that might come because of it. She got reamed by bloggers, reporters, comedians worldwide. Why is nourishing a starving baby funny or awkward? One of the natural impulses of a mother is to feed a hungry child. I guarantee you this…if I was on a mission trip to Haiti or Africa and was holding a starving baby and I was lactating…I wouldn’t even think twice about nursing that child. I’d give that baby the best meal he/she has had in awhile.

I think what led me down this path was I saw a picture of one of my best friends, Erin, holding a Haitian baby. I couldn’t help but wonder when the last time that baby has eaten. I’m sure this is the natural mother in me coming out because before I became a mother, I probably wouldn’t have thought that. As I was looking at the picture I remembered Salma Hayak and her selfless act to nourish a life. And if I was there with my friend Erin…I guarantee you I would have pulled out a boob and given that baby a good meal! 🙂

I guess once you start getting free stuff from couponing…you are addicted. I becomes a game. A hunt for the best deal. Well, I am no pro…yet…but I am learning and am loving the deals I’m finding. This deal today is from Target. All of Target’s GE Smart light bulbs are on sale. It’s for Earth Day. So, the single pack is $2.69 right now. Target has a coupon for $2 off any GE Smart bulb. You can find it on my post from yesterday. You can print out as many coupons as you want, I think. I’ve printed off 4 so far and it hasn’t called in the coupon police :). GE also has a coupon out for $2 off any Smart light bulb. Bingo…you just made $1.31 in your pocket. Ok, here’s the catch…Target won’t pay you any money they owe you, so you gotta get something else worth the overage. Also, if you already printed out the GE Smart coupon for $2 twice, then you are done. You can’t print more than 2. But, GE also has another $1 off coupon so you can use that instead ( This is what I had to do because yesterday I used the $2 GE coupons at Publix. I might have to get some more tomorrow but I promise not to blog about light bulbs anymore!

I had to go back to Publix today for this deal. I grabbed one pack yesterday but thought it was such a good deal…hello, it’s free…so I printed my coupons to get 2 more boxes. These are the GE Energy Smart bulbs. So, this is a double, frugal wammy! Not only are they free but they will save me money in energy in the long run…oh, and you get a free Publix bag as well!

They are on sale at Publix right now for $4.99. FYI, Publix accepts competitor coupons. So here’s how I did it:

1) Target coupon: go to this website and print out $2 off coupon.  –

2) Print out GE manufactor coupon for $2 off as well

3) Then print out target coupon for .99 off + a free Publix bag!

I am so excited about this trip because I saved a lot for what little groceries I had. I would have saved even more if I would have been keeping up with the Sunday coupons, but ever since I went home for the holidays I got out of my coupon groove. But, I’m getting back into it now. Here’s a picture of  $74.66 worth of groceries that I got for only $28.52!!!!!! That’s $46.14 in savings! Wooohooo! Check it out:

6 months ago I would have never thought that buying NAME brands could save me so much money. I used to always buy store brands and thought I was doing good. I am very proud of myself for this trip…it, honestly, was just a last minute trip because I needed coffee but I couldn’t pass up some of the deals and coupons I matched. I LOVE and if you want to learn more about couponing, you should go there. She is great! She even does coupon workshops. Ok, I’m elated so I’m gonna go play with my daughter!
